A frase é de Sasha Frere-Jones e está integrada no abstract da sua entrada na EMP Pop Conference deste ano (19-22 de Abril). S/FJ tentará extrapolar uma teoria da razão por que o R&B se tornou o género musical mais popular na América em 2001. Doze das 15 canções que chegaram ao topo da tabela Billboard Hot 100 nesse ano enquadram-se no R&B.
"The first thing pop had to say about 9/11 was this: nothing". Escreve S/FJ que a cabeçada de Zidane no último Mundial se tornou um êxito pop muito mais rapidamente que o 11 de Setembro. Acrescenta no entanto que o episódio de Zidane "is already pop: instantaneous, hypnotizing, slightly inexplicable at first, then infinitely explicable, and able to stand for anything. 9/11 evades everything but itself. Its historical weight overwhelms encapsulation at smaller levels—pop, comedy sketches, newspapers—and, at the level of image, it was instantly already its own advertisement, commentary and permanent museum."

S/FJ refere também que o 11 de Setembro não encontrou ainda a sua forma poética, “unless we consider the entire internet as a poetic form”.
